A broken foot helped lead Jan Walsh to a successful business venture.

After suffering the injury in California and traveling back to Birmingham, Walsh had a difficult time finding the health care information she needed.

“From that experience, I really started to notice firsthand patients looking for answers online,” she said.

Turns out, Walsh was the perfect person to help alleviate that lack of local information. Having already started successful local information sites, including birminghamrestaurants.com, Walsh decided to launch birminghamdoctors.com.

Physicians, hospitals and other facilities pay to be listed on the site, which Web users can browse for free to find the health care information they are looking for.

Walsh said there was a clear need for a local site devoted to health care, since many physicians don’t have their own Web sites or have outdated ones. The site immediately secured contracts with the area’s largest hospitals, including the Baptist Health System, Brookwood Medical Center, Children's Health System, St. Vincent's Health System, Trinity Medical center, and UAB Health System.

Traffic at the site has also steadily increased since its April launch, Walsh said.

With its consumer-centric focus, Walsh said the Health Care Heroes 2009 Winner Jan Walshbirminghamdoctors.com model is one that could be replicated across the country.

But with Birmingham’s major health care industry, it was a natural place to start - especially considering the number of individuals and families who come to the Magic City for medical care.

“It fulfills such a need,” she said. “Birmingham is such a world-class health care destination, we need this for our population and beyond.”
