Dr. Michael Patterson specializes in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and practices at Lemak Sports Medicine & Orthopedics in the Alabaster location.

Education, Training and Experience

Dr. Patterson is a graduate of Florida State University, where he was a defensive back under Head Coach Bobby Bowden from 1985 to 1987, and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He continued his education at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Patterson completed his Residency in Orthopaedics at Orlando Regional in June of 1999, and went on to sub-specialize in Sports Medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham where he completed his Fellowship in the summer of 2000.

During his fellowship with Dr. Lemak, he helped provide care for Auburn University, Samford University, and Miles College. In addition, Dr. Patterson also has been involved with NFL Europe League, and the care and rehabilitation of their athletes.

Dr. Patterson has also provided sports medicine coverage for Pelham and Bryant High Schools.

Being a former Division I athlete, Dr. Patterson understands the need every patient, parent, and coach needs, and knows the best and effective manner in which to provide care.


Dr. Patterson is a Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; American Academy of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine; American Medical Society; and American Sports Medicine Fellowship Alumni Association.

In addition, Dr. Patterson has presented numerous papers on Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine to the American Orthopaedic Association, Florida Orthopaedic Society, and the Florida Hand Society.

Dr. Patterson is currently an Assistant Professor for the Department of Family Medicine for the University of Alabama, where helps teach medical students about examining and determining injuries in a clinical setting. Dr. Patterson is also involved with the Pelham Rotary Club, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, and Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Dr. Patterson is the Vice-Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for the National Center for Sports Safety.


Dr. Michael Patterson is the newest physician to Lemak Sports Medicine, but is no stranger to practicing in Central Alabama or in Birmingham. Dr. Patterson will be overseeing our Shelby County location. Dr. Patterson and his wife Shauna (who is also a Registered Nurse) have three children. In his spare time, Dr. Patterson is an avid hunter and enjoys playing golf.
